Mystery ballots in Maine state Senate race bring call for investigation

Democrats question how 21 more votes from Long Island, all for the Republican, turned up in the very close District 25 recount.

Maine Democratic Party is calling for investigation into ballot count discrepancies on Long Island The party’s claim involves 21 ballots from the island town that appeared on Nov. 18, when the Secretary of State’s Office conducted recount in the race between Republican Cathy Manchester of Gray and Democrat Cathy Breen of Falmouth. The ballots were not tabulated by Long Island officials on election night Nov. 4, and all 21 of them were cast for Manchester, according to written statement Tuesday from Secretary of State Matt Dunlap.

The 21 ballots, combined with ballots from other towns that had been missing or were changed in the recount, were enough to reverse the results of the election and give Manchester an 11-vote victory over Breen, 10,927 to 10,916. The unofficial election night results, before the recount, showed Breen beating Manchester by 32 votes, 10,930 to 10,898.

The Maine Democratic Party did not accept the results of the recount, which means the Maine Senate will create a special committee to review the recount and recommend a winner to the full Senate. Republicans will control the Senate when it is sworn in Dec. 3 and will hold four of the seven seats on the committee, which has broad discretion to make a recommendation as it evaluates the recount results.

Kate Knox, a Maine Democratic Party attorney, hopes the Senate committee investigates the Long Island ballots before making its recommendation. Specifically, she wants the committee to order a new recount and subpoena the Long Island town clerk to explain why the official tally on a sealed box of ballots, as well as a voter manifest, differed from the number of ballots inside the box.

And yet they have no questions at all when a democrat district has 120% showing (when the average is 40% of voters actually voting) and 100% Democrat votes in the 120% districts...

Technically the GOP surrender of House seats is not yet final. The House (I'm not sure whether the current one or the rest of the incoming one) has the final word and in theory can seat whomever they wish without judicial review. In theory they could declare Pelosi a loser, not that I would advise that.

The Rats in my memory have stolen seats by the action of their House majority. Similar action by the GOP may exist, but I suspect would be ancient. I've advised they consider looking at one or more of these close races if they have a willing candidate and a arguable case. Our base would eat up any crumb of the GOPe actually fighting... for them, whereas there wouldn't be much difference in what the left would spew if we act. You don't want to go too far with it or you risking turning off our holier than thou purists. Shame the other side lacks such. The right conditions may or may not exist this election, but if they do it would be either AZ-2 (McSally), if the rats it steal back in recount, or one of a couple close races in CA.

The Arizona recount is a mess and I predict will be battled out in the courts for a few months

This is a demonrat ploy to use when people say the election fraud always occurs for demonrats

Or they were hidden by RATs...

Besides, we've been told there's no such thing as voter fraud.

Haven't we?

And ideally the GOP should respond to rat whining over this by enacting strong voter id and ballot security legislation, to minimize any future risks for voter fraud. And advertise the legislation as a response to rat concerns nationally. Never let a crisis go to waste... Maybe the voters will reward them with the 8 more seats they need to control their House as well.

Hear, hear!

All elections are messy. But at the usual margins we don't delve deeply enough to notice it. I stress, the courts, including the Supreme Court, do NOT have final jurisdiction here. If they cannot provide a satisfactory resolution (satisfactory to whom, to whom DOES have that jurisdiction) in reasonable time they can and should be booted out the process.
