One of the largest email spammers at the time who lived in Michigan was interviewed in a newspaper. It was called “the house that spam built”. His name Alan Ralsky.
Soon he started to receive actually physical mail in his mailbox. Tons of it as his address was publish by those that were tired of spam and now had a name of a spammer they could punish. People signed him up for all kinds of offers such as magazines, catalogs etc. He eventually was sentenced to 4 years in jail for spamming.
