With their campaign to save Christmas snowballing, traditionalists are expected to pack Marshfield High Schools auditorium tonight in hopes of persuading the School Committee to reverse its decision to rename the late December vacation as the holiday break.
There are signs all over town: Theres Still a Christmas, Bring Back Christmas. Theres some little kids in town picking up on this and wondering if Santa is going to come to their house, said attorney Dennis Scollins, the Marshfield School Committees longest-serving member and one of two who stood up for St. Nick when the board voted 3-2 on Sept. 9 to replace Christmas with holiday for the Dec. 24 to Jan. 2 vacation.
More than 4,245 signatures collected by a pro-Noel petition drive prompted the special meeting at 8 p.m.
Board chairwoman Marti Morrison said she loves Christmas but led the charge to scrub the calendar and is now being assailed around town as the Grinch because of it.
Supposedly our whole country is based on religious freedom, Morrison said. I certainly appreciate when people feel very strongly about their religious background, but as a School Committee member, my job is to make decisions I believe are in the best interest of our town.
In a heavily Irish Catholic town, Morrison said, The world around us looks very different than Marshfield. We want our students to be open to differences.
Pro-holiday voter Carol Shrand, the boards vice-chair, said, This is really about using inclusive language that reflects the diversity of faiths here in Marshfield. We take an oath to serve all our students and each and every one of them needs to feel welcome, included and represented.
Elaine Taylor, whose children are now grown, has been the driving force behind the resurrection of Christmas vacation. Her backers will be hitting the streets today holding signs and playing Christmas carols, as well as lighting up the phone lines, reminding supporters to turn out tonight.
Im getting an overwhelmingly supportive response everywhere I go, Taylor said. Im an American. I love my country. I want to keep the values that my country and the town were founded on.
Still, Taylor is swimming against a politically correct tide. While Brockton continues to observe Christmas Recess on its public schools calendar, in Boston its Winter Recess; in Plymouth, Holiday Recess; in Duxbury, Winter Break: in Worcester, Holiday Vacation; and in Beverly the blandest of all December Vacation.
Marshfields school calendar has gone back and forth, showing holiday vacation break prior to 2007, when Scollins said he insisted Christmas vacation be restored.

OK. Have school on December 25. No big deal.
This was due to one email of complaint I think they’re saying
By making everything generic?!
I think the department stores are getting more politically correct as they consolidated into fewer and fewer holding companies.
Step 1. Find out who made the complaint.
Step 2. send christmas carolers to their house. On the hour, every hour.
Step 3. You’ve heard of flash mobs? Three words: “flash nativity scene”.
Step 4. Send a crying Santa Claus to knock on their door and ask “why do you hate me so much?”

It is insane; they advertise “15 more days” but won’t say until what...
next step is to remove the days off
Really. The douchebags that think this crap up would be howling if we revoked all of the paid time off aspects of Christian holidays.
I wonder when the radical/secular/atheist left will do when they discover that the word holiday is just a contracted form of the words holy day?
Call it “off-day” or something equally bland...
I still say “Merry Christmas” and could care less what people think of it.
Christmas is a Federal Holiday.
When do they implement Aug 4th "Baraq Hussein Obama Birthday and End of Ramadan" ?
“Holiday” means “Holy Day”
This is an example of Socially Concerned upper middle class white folks who lead wholly upper middle class White existences who, like Joe Pesci with grits, have heard about minorities, they’ve just never actually seen one. But being Socially Concerned white folks, they know they’re supposed to be inclusive and all, and they need to embrace well, well, well they don’t actually know what. But whatever it is, they need to embrace it, and dropping the word Christmas is how they’re going to do it.
Because there’s a big world out there, and someday they may actually visit it on vacation.
Forget being “miffed”, hurt, peeved, upset. etc.
Get FURIOUS. Find your righteous rage and demand a stop to this garbage.
Maybe they should call it “Not Christmas Break.”
>>Despite 4K name petition to restore Christmas Vacation name many defend Holiday Break in Marshfield >>Others in Marshfield defending holiday break name change as inclusive
