Your Airport’s Bartender Problem
The Atlantic ^ | November 17, 2014 | Wayne Curtis

Posted on 11/23/2014 7:21:27 PM PST by PJ-Comix

It’s 4:30 on a weekday afternoon, and you’ve got an hour until boarding starts for your connecting flight home for the holidays. You’re ready for a cocktail. Maybe even two. Which is fine—as long as you’re in the mood to party like it’s 1999. Because, on the whole, airport bars are still running 15 years behind the craft-cocktail movement.

In seemingly every American airport, you can find outposts of what might be called the Status Quo Ante Bar, where the spirits are uninteresting and the drinks indifferently made. While dining choices have been steadily improving, and good wine is easier to find—the commendable Vino Volo now operates at two dozen airport locations—with few exceptions, airports have been slow to offer quality cocktails.

yup, all these foo foo drinks are pretty much for kids, amateur drinkers or people that don't like the taste of alcohol

The point is missed in that commercial as the hipster bartender is the subject of ridicule when it’s the dumb twat that ordered a “deconstructed whatever” in the first place.

I think most of the airport bartenders are unionized. At least the ones I talked to were. And like government workers, they don’t give a crap. They are not as dependent on tips as your normal restaurant/corner/club bartenders.

I generally don’t drink when I fly. I like to fly. Well, the actual flying part, not the TSA hokey pokey/ security kabuki theater part. When i was a teenager I was in CAP and in the good weather months got to fly about once a month. When I go to DisneyWorld the last ride I go on is the flight home. Besides, flying tends to dehydrate you, and alcohol makes it worse. I just drink water or soda. Once I get to the resort, Katy, bar the door!

Elijah Craig 12 year old and crushed ice. Mmm. My favorite. Also $29. But..........

Here is a little secret for bourbon drinkers. Trader Joe’s sells their branded bourbon (made in Louisville). Pretty decent $15 bourbon. Especially if your budget has been decimated like mine has this year.

I think the best solution to this problem can be found at the delta sky club at the Honolulu airport. A stocked bar with a serve yourself sign.

Love that bar

Personally I like the dehydrating effect.

Fewer trips to the restroom is a plus in so many ways especially with today's packed flights, narrow aisles, and limits on how many people can wait by the restroom door.

We used to stop over in San Juan airport. We quickly learned how to hunt down the barkeep and order beers. We would sit drinking while other travelers would sit actually waiting to be waited on by the bartender talking with his friends. After about a 10 or 15 minute wait most people walked out.

I hear ‘ya. I make sure I go to the bathroom before we take off because I’m both big and tall. And I don’t know who they design those aircraft toilets for, it sure as hell ain’t me.

Having never watched Portlandia... That was rather entertaining. The whole scene at the restaurant trying to just get a cheeseburger and fries was j7st hilarious.

Bushmill’s and a dash of water for me, please. Make it the 16 year old single malt if you have it.

Then overshadowed by a twat who doesn’t know his a-hole from a swizzle stick......when a REAL dude steps in to “keep it simple stupid”. He educated the hipster twat AND his date.

I am a super frequent traveler, and my only problem with airport bars is they are never big enough. All the seats are always occupied

On international flights, tho, it exacerbates the jet lag.
