I thought the manufacturers were supposed to put orange end caps on the barrels. I have a couple BB guns that don't have orange tips, made in the 1990s. Lots of older BB guns still remain in circulation.

They are, but that is only for point of sale...
Once it is purchased, the owners can remove the tips or paint them or put electrical tape over them.
I see it at airsoft fields all the time...no one wants to get whacked by a bb because they exposed their position as a result of the orange tip.
