If it were a hermaphrodite, the article wouldn’t have characterized it as “born a man.”

This person is an actual hermaphrodite, who chose which sex to be in her teens.

Explains nothing. There is no way to verify the medical records and condition of such people. Every mutilated cross-dresser claims to "have a uterus" which is just a delusion. They were not born with it.
