A video posted online claims to show that Islamic State militants have killed the captured US aid worker Abdul-Rahman Kassig.
The video shows a masked man standing over a severed head which he says is that of Mr Kassig.
The US says it is working to determine the authenticity of the video, which also shows a mass beheading of 18 Syrian troops.
Mr Kassig, also known as Peter, was captured last year.
His family, who live in the US state of Indiana, said they were awaiting confirmation of the reports about their "treasured son".
"We prefer our son is written about and remembered for his important work and the love he shared with friends and family, not in the manner the hostage takers would use to manipulate Americans and further their cause," the family said in a statement.

Calling Islam a religion of peace by an Infidel or a so-called Muslim, should enrage a fundamental Muslim who knows what Allah and Muhammed want done to spread the religion.
Another reason why so many so-called Muslims get killed. In a sense they are worse than us Infidels, because they are undermining the religion as layed out in the Koran and Hadiths. -Tom
I figured it was just a matter of time before he met the same fate as many other ‘useful idiots’. They strung this one out for quite a while, getting full media exposure for their propaganda. ISIS knew they were not going to get a ransom payment for this one, no, President O only pays ransom for other Islamists, i.e. Bo Bergdahl.
In earlier days, someone like this, an idealistic person, uncommitted to and suspicious of western spirituality searching to belong somewhere may have gone to either the Peace Core, or joined a Neighborhood Gang. At least, at this point, his family knows his outcome, and does not have the constant worry about what he may be experiencing. This may, may serve as a hard lesson to others in his circle of “change the world” friends.
Weak muslims are the islamic state’s primary targets right now. They’re in the purification jihad stage. That’s why their caliph took the name Abu Bakr. He has the same task as the first caliph: getting their house in order for the coming global war/conquest.
Why is this so surprising. We read about Muslims in the Middle East killing each other all the time. The victim, if he was a Muslim, probably belonged to the wrong tribe or sect. So if they freely kill each other, then why would they not hesitate to kill us?
Maybe someone who knows the tribal variations can comment on this. I know Saddam Hussein in Iraq used his power and influence to keep a balance of peace between the Sunni’s and Shiites. I know some Muslims hate us because of our differences in theologies. Do they hate each other for the same reason. If so, which Muslims are the good guys?
While Obama plays golf, ISIS and all the other changes in the Middle East and elsewhere are happening so fast I’m losing track. Somebody please tell me in layman terms what the he** is going on. I’d like to know what is the good in all of this and for whom.
Otherwise, failing to understand the Muslim people, their religion and faith, and their actions, I look to see if they bear any good fruit. From that I will know them according to the master I serve.

This man, I read, was a former Army Ranger. It is not completely out of the realm of possibility that he could have easily been an intelligence asset on the ground. Aide worker is a good cover for such doings.
Regarding the man’s conversion to Islam.... My understanding is that if you are captured by these monsters that beheading can be the least painful way out of their captivity. I’ve noticed that the two who already had their heads removed appeared to almost welcome it or were resigned to get things over with. If a conversion lets one “skip the pleasantries” of IS torture before your beheading, then I can hardly blame some for doing it. Hopefully, few will ever have to walk in those shoes. Let God do the judging after the fact.
Lastly, the man was an American and a former Ranger. Condolences to his loved ones and RIP to him.
I worked on the MX missile many years ago at what was then Martin Marietta. That was one of our sayings for the MX (also known as the "Peacekeeper"). It was a travesty that we allowed the MX to be the first system dismantled under the START treaty. It was our newest and most capable ICBM and we just threw it away while the Russians continued to upgrade theirs.
Yes, let's hope he has learned his lesson.
