I once read a book by a Vietnam vet about his experiences in the war. He included a helpful glossary in the back which defined terms that people might not be familiar with; it included the "f word" with this approximate definition:

F word: The most common word in the G.I.'s vocabulary with the possible exception of the word "the".

But they didn’t come home and use it in front of their mother or children.

Today, “entertainers” don’t give a damn who they use it in front of. Major difference.
