House Speaker John Boehner has stuck an Internet sales tax proposal in a drawer and he doesn't intend to dust it off before the end of the Christmas shopping season if he considers it at all.
The Marketplace Fairness Act, passed last year in the Senate, would allow each state to force out-of-state online retailers to collect sales taxes from its residents.
But a Boehner spokesman said late Monday in a statement that the plan isn't going anywhere.

“One for common sense, and a hat tip to Boehner. The latter is a rarity but Id be happy to do it more often.”
Good for you.
Lets hope that you, other freepers, and I get carpal tunnel syndrome next year from tipping our hats or saluting congress for doing the right thing.
Decades ago one of our younger relatives went to Oregon to go to a trade school.
He worked as a low paid intern before his certification. I did his state and fed income taxes for him.
His Oregon income tax hit was incredible based on very low salary bases. The following is from 2009, and it is probably worse.
How Oregon State income tax rates are structured:
The tax table below will show in detail the Oregon state income tax rates by income tax bracket(s). There are 3 income tax brackets for Oregon.
If your income range is between $0 and $3,050, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 5%.
If your income range is between $3,051 and $7,600, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 7%.
If your income range is $7,601 and over, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 9%.
Income tax brackets data last updated March 3rd, 2009.
Thanks, I shudder and grin at the same time, whenever you post this. Keep posting it:
Until the time they determine you are a threat to the system. That’s when the enforcement happens. Remember the quote from “Atlas Shrugged”:
Did you really think we want those laws observed?” said Dr. Ferris.”
“We want them to be broken. You’d better get it straight that it’s not a bunch of boy scouts you’re up against... We’re after power and we mean it... There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted and you create a nation of law-breakers and then you cash in on guilt. Now that’s the system, Mr. Reardon, that’s the game, and once you understand it, you’ll be much easier to deal with.
They make up for it in personal income tax.
It would be much simpler to just let the government take all your money, then they could send you what they think you should have.
The software does not get fined if the state did not receive one of its quarterly payments. You get fined. So the software is immaterial here.
Ah, well, there's the rub, isn't it? Raise revenue from what? Income tax? Property tax?
"What if states got rid of their sales taxes"
At the state level, some odd math comes into play. They actually have to consider the *expense* of a tax compared to the revenue it brings in. The expense of overseeing a sales tax is huge, having to pour over the books of every business in the state.
And it is just one of the taxes levied on business. So if you combined business taxes, with the idea of ending the sales tax, you would likely get business on board if you could show them they would save money as well as the state saving money.
Sounds like you need to find a better place to live.
Your post is incidental to me, because I happen to live in one of the few places that does not have sales tax... You know, like it used to be wherever you are.
No, sales taxes are not implemented because they are some sort of fair balance, Sales tax is implemented because they done wrung as much as they could out of income taxes without folks blowing a cork. And, like gasoline taxes, sales tax winds up being embedded revenue that no one pays attention to. Folks wind up not even knowing how badly they are getting reamed.
And finally, paying businesses to collect the tax is not the issue - the coercion is the issue - Placing the responsibilities of one upon another. And in practice, it winds up being a rake on the pot - the tax is actually wholly on the business owner, not on you. You may pay more to cover it, but it is the business owner that is on the hook for it. Employment taxes and health taxes amount to the same thing, in the same fashion.
Which leads me again to my main thrust: When the tax man comes and takes the tax directly out of YOUR own pocket, and YOU are responsible to defend YOUR own self, and keep track of it YOUR own self, I guarantee that taxation will go precipitously downward in a fairly immediate fashion.
Ever hear of guarantees, insurance, liability, and compensatory damages?
I knew you had. This is becoming a waste of time. Take your fear mongering to somewhere it will work.
You get fined if your income taxes are wrong too, yet somehow people find a way to use tax accountants.
Maybe some day you'll learn how a market works. It might make you a more successful business person.
Alibaba is already in operation, and is huge.
But guess what? States are already tapping into federal customs data bases and are sending sales tax bills to buyers of expensive items from foreign sources.
And if someone from Florida buys something in Ohio, will he get a refund on his overpayment?
No, I guess not.
That certainly isn’t something you support.
How would you prefer the government to collect state taxes?
Uh, *cough, cough* I pay those taxes in Michigan, either the set fee they say or my actual tax. I choose their handy-dandy set fee. I have this fear they know and will come looking for me if I don’t pay that tax. LOL
Thank you Republicans
democrats would have passed this internet tax if democrats had both houses, ditto for Amnesty, gun control , full socialism etc.
Plus he is starving the State Beast.
What revenue does a state really need to raise? First step is user fees. That would keep government bloat down.
