- House speaker isn't going to bring up a Senate-passed 'fairness' bill during the lame-duck congressional session
- Legislation would allow states to collect sales taxes from their residents' online purchases, no matter where the e-tailer is located
- Brick-and-mortar stores and their trade groups want a mandate because they all have to collect sales taxes from walk-in customers
- Republicans worry that all online stores, including small businesses, will find themselves having to deal with paperwork for nearly every US state
House Speaker John Boehner has stuck an Internet sales tax proposal in a drawer and he doesn't intend to dust it off before the end of the Christmas shopping season if he considers it at all.
The Marketplace Fairness Act, passed last year in the Senate, would allow each state to force out-of-state online retailers to collect sales taxes from its residents.
But a Boehner spokesman said late Monday in a statement that the plan isn't going anywhere.

Not to mention the accounting nightmare for part-time internet sellers.

I’ve to hand it to Boner - the guy at least knows NOT to kill our struggling economy with burdensome new taxes.

Is this a wind-up for Net Neutrality?

The last thing small e-businesses need is to be crushed under a mountain of red tape.

The UK media reports stuff that isn’t getting press here.
The media dinosaurs hate the Internet because its rendered them obsolete.

Of course they consumers still owe the Use Tax.
You DO pay the Use Tax, right?

Some states do impose a sales tax on online purchases but in practice they never collect it because there’s no POS receipt for a transaction.

Bought a new TV for our master bedroom a couple of months ago. Purchased at a local brick-and-mortar store for about the same price as online. Nearly all reputable online retailers selling flat screen TVs are collecting sales tax for California anyway. As it is, California has a Use Tax law requiring the tax to be paid on these online purchases and has for some time. Choose to ignore this at your own risk.

We’re lucky here in Ohio. We can still purchase things on Amazon with no sales tax. Of course, we’re supposed to “cough cough” report it on our state income taxes and pay the sales tax there. Uh, right.
To: bigdaddy45
What happens when the States go to Amazon and ask for all purchases from people in their State? They are desperate for money and it’s likely sooner or later that’s where they will go.

Nearly all reputable online retailers selling flat screen TVs are collecting sales tax for California anyway. I don't know about TVs, but back in the 1990s California went after the PC business by telling all the major mail order retailers that they didn't have to collect tax for California, but if they didn't they would never get any California state, city or public school orders. Many (including Gateway 2000 from whom I bought a computer at the time) decided that charging California customers was a good idea even if they never had a sales nexus in the state.

Even a broken House Speaker is right twice a year. Congrats to Boehner.

I bought a Bosch router, a 6517 EVT for $160 listed for $219 from an Outfit In Ohio full warranty. That price is not available here in NH.
