Voters in Berkeley, Calif., have passed the nations first soda tax with a resounding 75 percent of the vote. The measure aims to reduce the effects of sugar consumption on health, especially increased rates of obesity and diabetes.
It will levy a penny-per-ounce tax on most sugar-sweetened beverages and is estimated to raise more than $1 million per year. Proceeds will go to the general fund; Measure D calls for the creation of a health panel to advise Berkeleys City Council on appropriate health programs to receive funding.
Campaign Co-Chair Jack Daniels called Berkeleys win a tipping point. I think you will now see many, many other cities and communities around the country looking at this as a genuine public policy to address the diabetes and obesity crisis that we face, he said.

——What we learned here in Berkeley, he said, is that when voters learn the truth about sugary beverages, when they learn that they are one of the central causes of the growing diabetes epidemic, they want to tax it, they want to regulate these products.-——
How about just not drink the stuff when you learn about the health risks....
O wait’ that would mean you need common sense ....
Every person with a brain will buy outside the city avoiding the tax and sell it out of his house or apartment....to make extra money....
That will be the black market....
Heh, heh! I’m more of a beer guy, but I, too, like my more potent potables straight-up, for sippin’ and savoring. One of my drivers brought me some moonshine and WOW, does that stuff burn goin’ down! Don’t take much to get a glow going on...
Unlike the stereotype of SF being gay (they're a small minority), SF is full of families with children. Also thousands of restaurants. People like to wash down their food with soda, not just water or wine. Lots of stores cater to folks who buy soda. And SF is a lot bigger than Berkeley. Tax the soda and you'll have a revolt the likes of which city hall has never seen before. One of the drinks I like getting with my burritos at Mexican restaurants is horchata, made with cinnamon, rice, almonds, lime, vanilla and water
and lots of sugar. If they tax bottled and canned drinks in stores, they'll have to tax sugared drinks of all kinds including Starbucks treats (full of sugar) and sugared additions to alcohol (yeah I know kids aren't supposed to have that but there is a war on sweets).
I'd bet the city will have a SWAT team doing nothing but taking down those ops.
Interesting point.
It would violate progressive dogma to tax Starbux.
That photo is a hoot. Salinas Police Swat. Hell, there likely are more illegal aliens in Salinas than US citizens.
Berkeley, where hurting the little guy is a citywide sport.
From the EBT card straight to Berekely.
Leftist’s find a way to tax the federal government LOL!
will these idiots in the picture run the Soda Black market ?
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
“Please government save us from ourselves. We’re are stupid and unable to not consume too much soda pop.”
Man, these people are complete caricatures of themselves.
***Voters in Berkeley, Calif., have passed the nations first soda tax ****

California is so far behind us in Illinois, we’ve had the tax since 2009.
Malibu banned “Whole Foods” grocery stores
They think this raise a million bucks a year?
I hope everyone leaves town and buys soda by the case and then brings it back
what if soda companies just stopped selling soda in that town?
I wonder if Starbucks etc are exempt?
A 2 Ltr for $4.75?
I can get them for $1.49 at HEB without a sale and I have a $1 off 2 2-ltr bottles. So basically 4 ltrs with $2 plus sales tax, about 16 cents.
