Venezuela is stepping up efforts to combat shortages and rising places so families can have a merry Christmas complete with 12-cent sacks of sugar and 50-cent chickens.
President Nicolas Maduro announced Friday that he is deploying hundreds of inspectors to enforce the government's price regulations, which set the cost of everything from milk to toothbrushes artificially low.
"Today we deploy, and in November and December you will see that we have guaranteed a happy Christmas for the people," he said during televised remarks.

Those “smugglers” who have been jailed aren’t all big gangs of thugs. Many are ordinary citizens who have crossed the border into Venezuela to do their normal shopping. A couple days ago I posted an article on this where a couple of women bought half a dozens items but were thrown in jail. The article didn’t make it plain if the cashier was jailed as well because she didn’t check their citizenship.

Won’t they ever learn. Salvador tried the same thing in Chile during the 70’s. Shortages and pent up inflation got so bad that someone put enough explosives in his car to send it flying over a 15’ wall...with him in it.
