How do we make sense of the fact that America’s most progressive cities, the ones that cherish diversity, are losing African Americans? And that the most conservative places are doing the opposite?
Between 2000 and 2010, cities like Austin, Chicago, Washington D.C., San Francisco—places that vote majority Democrat, consider themselves socially and culturally progressive, and boast racial diversity—all lost unprecedented numbers of African Americans. San Francisco, for instance, saw a staggering 20.4 percent loss in its African American population between 2000 and 2010. Chicago and Washington D.C. also experienced double-digit losses.
During that same decade, the only three major cities (populations over 500,000) that voted Republican in the 2012 presidential election— Phoenix, Fort Worth, and Oklahoma City—all saw significant increases in African American numbers; their African-American populations grew by 36.1 percent, 28 percent and 11.4 percent respectively.

Chicago is a sanctuary city. Large parts of previously black neighborhoods will never be repopulated.
Section 8 housing is moving out of midtown and into the burbs where legions of new apartments are being built. I call them egg crates or incubators. The line for the school bus stretches through the gate of the apartment block and deep into it. Looks just like downtown Tegucigalpa, San Jose, Costa Rica, San Salvador, Managua or Guatemala City... take your pick. All the same to me... invaders and trouble. House keepers, dishwashers, fast food employees, construction labor and lawn boys to others.

The only reason there are less blacks living in Chicago is because they tore the projects down.
Section 8 vouchers moved many blacks all over the Chicago-land area. This is the reason why crime went down in Chicago (I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s true) and many suburbs had a tremendous increase in crime.
Yuppies had nothing to do with it.
Gentrification. Blacks aren't being "pushed" out, they're leaving due to economics. A home that may have originally cost them $20,000 can be sold for $750,000; they move east to the suburbs, buy a better home for half the price and enjoy the profits. Back in the 1960s, there were lots of blacks in SF. Something like 15 percent of the city was black while the suburbs were for the most part white. Now it's probably 5 percent or lower, dropping lower every year. The blacks are leaving because they want to. Meanwhile yuppies and hipsters are moving into the city. Hispanics are bristling at the conversion of "formerly" latino areas into white hangouts (which were originally white prior to the 60s). The changes I've seen in the last 60 years are amazing. Black ghettos going upscale and turning Asian. Maybe there's hope to turn San Francisco back to conservatism (was a Republican city for most of the 20th century).
I am from Chicago originally. I remember when they tore down lots of public housing, including parts of Cabrini Green in the 90s.
Well, there are areas where these hipster types moved in and gentrified neighborhoods. They can be heard on the weekends with that nonstop cornhole game being played.
