When that deal went through, I read that service providers in Europe and Asia do not charge for messages sent by WhatsApp.

But, they do charge their customers for FaceBook messages, which means fewer FB messages and fewer ads sold.

I believe they use different transmission technologies.

I don't use FaceBook or Twitter, so I can't explain it any better than that.
