Me, too. 66 next month. I remember my uncle’s house with coal cellar & a shovel, but with automatic draft control to the registers in the rooms. Another relative had a furnace with an Iron Fireman helical stoker. For some reason there were clinkers all over the cellar floor. Later they all got natural gas furnaces, but another uncle who was widowed rented the last house in town with a coal furnace, dirt cheap. He shoveled coal & chopped wood like Ronald Reagan & that could explain why he lived to 93.
My grandfather was a WWI vet & a miner. He always referred to German helmets as `coal scuttles’.
That was East Ohio. Lived now fifty years in the South.
