I retired from teaching in June.

My primary subject was Life Science, but I was required to teach a world civilization class also.

The text (Glencoe)was actually pretty good. They set aside several chapters on Judaisms, Christianity, and Islam. Even did a focus on the Reformation.

I think it's important to teach those things because they are very important to history, and too many kids aren't learning it in the home these days. The problem is always balance and fairness. It's a tightrope act, but I think the effort must be made. I do not know whether the class material that was the subject of this particular article would have gotten my blessing (not enough info to go on), but I didn't like the suggestion by some that Islam should be totally ignored by the educational system.

The text this school is using turns out to come from one Jarrod McEntarfer, who teaches at the High School for Law and Public Service in NYC. He has a blog here (not updated recently). Does that name ring a bell?

The page photos in the article appear to come from his Our Textbook, World History: Patterns of Interaction. Skip down to "Chapter 10 - The Muslim World (600-1250)".
