The article leaves this as not being so clear cut. While I was in the Navy, not the Marines, I do think they need to give this more consideration, especially if the pace is not regulated and most everyone failed. Moving the goal posts to create failures is just as bad as moving them to create passes. At the end of the day the Marines, like all services, need to find ways to bring women into combat, to respect that they can and should be equal participants, that they have different physical limits. Besides, does EVERYONE need to carry a 124 pound backpack?! Is that what we really want selection of officers based on?

"Besides, does EVERYONE need to carry a 124 pound backpack?!"

Ask that question to the survivors of the Chosin Reservoir and see what they say.

It'll be a VERY cold day in hell when we start taking recommendations from a squid - especially about being in combat.

You bring up an interesting point. However, don't we want the best of the best to lead soldiers? Sure, bring more women into combat but you still want performance otherwise failure can bring tragedy.

Even if the Marines are coerced into "respecting the different physical limits" of women in combat, our adversaries will not respect those limits.

Any society that sends its women to fight before it sends its cane-borne old men and non-shaving boys deserves to be destroyed and will be by societies that do not make that mistake.

Why don’t we just let the Marines set their own standards, instead of some armchair ex enlisted sailor.

Oy. If you don't like the way the training regimen sounds, wait until you see the Fleet.

Even in the Navy there's MOS (Navy: 'Designator'/'NEC', or whatever) where they intentionally weed out a certain percentage of a class with a regimen designed to produce failures.

In USMC Infantry Officer's Course, there's NO question. They'll get rid of 30% of the men in that school. Some even on the first day. I've never seen a USMC infantry officer that wasn't an ostrich.

A female would have to be an Amazon Wookie Olympian Nuclear Mutant Lesboid to get through USMC OIC. One of them will make it eventually.

Why?

Seriously, why?

No, women don't belong in combat-period!

And the fact is they can't meet the physical requirements that combat demands.

If you are in the Infantry, you have to carry that load, both enlisted and Officers.

According to the army manuals I’ve read nobody is carrying 124 lb packs.

Um.no. They do not need to. Haven't they lowered the standards enough? Fewer chin-ups, fewer push-ups, fewer situps, lower walls to climb over...

Maybe they should join the Peace Corps

most everyone failed

Not most, all the women, and 6% of the men. As far as EVERYONE carrying a 124# pack, who shouldn't carry it? Just the guys spread load the 372# of the women and the women go slick? After all, if the women carried nothing, the guys would only have their load increased 7#, that seems fair.

Ok, can I assume that you think that having women in combat is a good thing?

Why do we need to bring women into combat? Because they are lethal on their period?

There MAY be some good things about having women in combat, but there are about a million things that are bad about that...Of course, if your claim is that discrimination is a terrible thing no matter where it happens? On the battle field the only goal is to kill more of the enemy than they kill of our side. Leave women in support positions, that will allow more men to be on the battlefield...

You ever been in the infantry? The purpose of forced maarchex with full pack and ammo is two fold. One is to survive combat and the other is to be able to carry your buddy so he can survive. It’s a grunt thing not a Hollywood thing.

Never been to war? Ever been in combat? Yes, they need to carry the same load as a man or get out but the cold hard truth is this is no place for a woman or equality or social agendas or any of that crap. Everyone is equal in the military before they advance. Everyone is torn down to the very same lowest common denominator then built up from there. Especially Marines.

You eat dirt, find mortar round containers to take a dump in if you can. You have dysentery. Your bung is raw, wet and red and miserable, your underwear are soiled and stay that way, you live in dirt with flies, bugs and spiders and you sweat buckets then you freeze. On top of that you stay alert and able because your life and all your buddies lives depend on it. As an officer you tell people to do things that will get them killed. You tell people to do miserable things and if you can’t do them yourself and won’t do them yourself they can and should tell you to go to hell. It is not a democracy and not some corpocracy where people get promoted to lead because they look and smell good or know someone and mistakes go without real consequence. What woman would want this and what woman should be allowed this “pleasure”. Think about it just a bit. If you still think the “Marines, like all services, need to find way to bring women into combat” I’ll tell you the really nasty stuff and then I’ll tell you how big a fool I really think you and like minded people are.

Being a REMF is a totally different story but there are no REMFs in the Marines in the beginning. Only riflemen.

People that promote these equality agendas make me puke. Most of the time their position is deeply seated in failure and envy because they can’t measure up.

Why? And not the B.S. you listed after the above statement. What real purpose does women in the Infantry serve? Are we not getting enough men to do the job? Are the combat arms branches just that much easier now? Are women that much stronger than men? Is their endurance far superior now?
