So the shooter's mother is a government official? Yikes! I don't know if you guys up north have a “5th Amendment” but if you do she's sure to invoke it once or twice when testifying before various investigative panels.

We have a similar provision in our Constitution (derived from English Common Law), but “taking the fifth” is not an option when somebody else is being prosecuted. Under the Canada Evidence Act, a witness can be compelled to incriminate himself when testifying in a case but that testimony cannot be used against him.
