Well, in 1980, he worked very hard to defeat Ronald Reagan’s attempt to gain the nomination of the Republican party. He was working for the Rockefeller wing even then. After Reagan secured the nomination, there is no record of him working for Reagan in Texas, although he claims now that he did. That’s the earliest example I know of about his anti-conservatism.
