There were two different types when I was in during the early and mid 1990s. The “old” ones had two internal filters (M17), and the new ones (M40)have an external cylinder.
The other issue is facial hair. If you can’t get a good seal, then it is useless.
The facial hair issue is that to which I referred. A quick good seal with facial hair is highly unlikely.
