WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama on Thursday authorized the Pentagon to call up reserve and National Guard troops if they are needed to assist in the U.S. response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
Obama signed an executive order that allows the government to call up more forces and for longer periods of time than currently authorized. There is no actual call-up at this point...

International Meals on Wheels.
I didn’t see the Japanese sending their military into the leaking atomic power plants. What sense does sending military in accept for perimeter control if our interests were at stake.
“”I dont understand what these 3rd world countries have to offer the USA anyways other than diseases.””
Perhaps a future U. S. president? You just never know anymore!
Strange thing to say, what is it supposed to mean?
He sure acts the part too.
Madness. Utter madness.
“Strange thing to say, what is it supposed to mean?”
I saw the Colorado National Guard in action in my neighborhood last year when they guarded neighborhoods after the devastating floods here. The privates making up the bulk of the forces were very young, many in the 21 age range, and they appeared to be unsure of themselves, slightly scared, not very well trained, and in general pretty clueless. I had the impression they probably had graduated from high school at best and many appeared to be from rural areas. Given all of that, the fact that they were given the authority to be in charge and the fact that they were carrying guns with live ammo scared the crap out of me.
Relative to my age, they’re children. And it would be criminal to send people like this into intense Ebola situations in some of the worst hell holes of Africa. These guys were barely able to man checkpoints at the entrances to upper middle class neighborhoods.
What unit was it?
Do you think the Green Berets and SEALs and Rangers, and Civil Affairs units, and medical units of the Reserves and Guard are untrained kids?
Often times the Guard and Reserves are superior to their younger, less experienced active counterparts, we have seen that in aviation units and armor units, and in units like medical, you may not realize that many Guard and Reserve units are people that are prior military that work in their fields full time, and when called to active are bringing massive amounts of experience, both in their job, and in working together as a unit for many years as a Reserve or Guard unit, that is common in medical.
“What unit was it?”
I really have no idea. Didn’t see any markings. Equipment and uniforms were all pretty drab and plain. Half the time I went through at dark, and the other half I just wanted to get through all the check point BS without avoid drawing attention to myself. I vaguely remembered asking and I think they said they were from Pueblo. The Guard here seems to have a policy of not using local units, because that way they view the locals as “not us” and are less reluctant to shoot.
If it was the Colorado National Guard, then maybe it was the Green Berets.
Long time Freeper- very infrequent poster .
Not sure how practical but here’s an idea.
Six to Ten governors from solid liberty loving states
1) Declare Impending State Level Health Emergencies.
2) Call up National Guard units within their respective state borders.
3) Authorize them to build new or rehabilitate unused existing facilities to create 100 bed Ebola treatment facilities to care for state residents & US citizens.
4) Refuse President’s call up request because of State level declared emergency
5) Order National Guard to stand down to illegal Federal call-up and order response to State level call-up
Trick is State Governors have to have courage to stand firm, even if it means issuance of arrest orders from FED Gov.
I believe this would call the President’ hand and be overwhelmingly supported by the citizens.
