Renewable energy is unreliable, and can never replace secure base load sources like coal, natural gas, and hydro. And now a bunch of greenies have embarrassed themselves and proved the point.
Attempting to show how wonderful solar power is, a band of self-righteous greenie demonstrators in Madison, WI, the Berkeley of the Midwest, instead demonstrated that reliance on renewables means brownouts and blackouts. Protesting a proposed rate increase by the local utility, Madison Gas & Electric, they made utter fools of themselves, and showed by reliable power from hydrocarbons is the only way to have secure energy supplies.
The MacIver Institute summarizes and offers a hilarious video that is less than two minutes long:
Demonstrators gathered outside the Public Service Commission to protest against a requested rate structure change by the local utility company, Madison Gas and Electric (MG&E). During the protest, they decried the use of "dirty coal" and called for more renewable energy. To make their point, they had a blow-up coal power plant that was running on a fan powered by wind and solar charged batteries. Before the protest was over, however, the batteries died and their solar panel could not produce enough energy to keep the power plant standing upright.

Demonstrators in Madison, WI demonstrate a major fail!
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
The guy says it's a 130-Watt Solar Panel and a 1000 Watt fan.
It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to know that the batteries won't work for long...
MGD always says, "Stupid should hurt". It's a pity that it doesn't sometimes.
It takes WAY more energie to make and charge a battery then the energy the battery can store. Having solar pannels charge large batteries for a tertiary power supply may work. (Power goes out, generator runs out of fuel, or fails.) Anything else will not work, while coal and gas will always burn and uranium will also split.
Greenies are manipiulated emotionally by entrepreneurs that sell the green technology. With all their alleged intelectual prowess (you know like the actors that say they speak 5 languages gluently then find out they learned they learned just a few phrases for overseas travel) you’d think they could figure that out.

“It doesn’t take a rocket surgeon...”
Certainly not. How about a brain scientist? Probably neither. ;oD
Yep. Gonna need at least 8 or 10 panels that size to sustain his dreams. Even in the bright sunshine.
The real MacGyver would not have this problem.
The referenced incident is symbolic of the misguided, Progressive, one central government movement imo.
It would have been icing on the cake if the good-intentioned “engineer” had warned about global warming.
Stuck on Stupid ping.
Perfect!
The guy admitted he charged the batteries the night before, uses wall outlets and gas generators. Just like a little kid running to mommy for food, they run to the wall outlets to charge batteries for their "green" demonstration.
I've got an idea! Rather than use a fan to inflate the balloon, they can burn coal in a can and generate hot air to inflate the balloon. These kids are so smart,
not.
Speaking of actors, pity Roy Scheider isn’t around to tell them that “They’re going to need a bigger battery”.
A pre-Common-Core 8-year-old would not have this problem.
Yes—let’s have energy policy determined by the “educated” who couldn’t identify which building on campus has the chemistry department.
They have absolutely no shame. None.
I could include this in a book “You Can’t Make This Up” but people would say I am being extreme.
Ultimately there’s no option — only so much of fossil fuel exists....
Surely you jest!
