“The end of the cringe”: Paul Krugman sounds off on progressive change in the Obama era (Salon)

From his perch as a New York Times columnist, Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman has often proven a thorn in President Barack Obama’s left side. So Krugman naturally generated buzz with his new Rolling Stone essay “In Defense of Obama,” a lengthy look at the president’s policy record and legacy.

Krugman’s conclusion? “This is what a successful presidency looks like,” he declares.

Obama may not have delivered every progressive goal, but his track record is nonetheless a solid one, Krugman argues. On health reform, Krugman writes that he and many other liberals would have liked to see a single-payer option, but politically, that “wasn’t on the table.” Despite its shortcomings, the Affordable Care Act has delivered health care to about 10 million new people and, the economist contends, is helping to slow the growth of health costs.

What’s particularly striking in the piece, though, is a nugget in which Krugman speculates about what may have helped achieve the gains that Obama has overseen. As Krugman observes, the Obama era has witnessed a transformation in the national debate on social issues like reproductive rights and marriage equality. Whereas Democrats cowered on these issues a decade ago, they’re now on the offense, and even if Obama was painfully slow to embrace causes like equal marriage, he’s presided over the party through that fightback. Krugman contrasts this newly assertive posture with Democrats’ former “reflexive cringe.”

I believe I know of a turning point for where the Democrats began to go "on the offense": the Terri Schiavo case. At the beginning of the furor over it, many Democrats, including Obama, supported Congress's efforts to intervene to save her life. Later, after the furor, Obama and other Democrats said they regretted trying to intervene. That because misleading polls and reporting spun the whole matter in the Democrats' favor, and they were emboldened by the whole situation.

“Success”???

The only rational explanation is that Krugman/Pelosi/Reid/Stalin/Obama have a different standard for success than decent people have chosen. No one who supports good would call anything Obama has done to our country a success.

Leaves one wondering what is their standard for failure.

Krugman considers Obamacare a great step forward, just didn't go all the way to socialized medicine. Many other brain dead left wingers feel the same way.

The Obama administration is arguably the greatest success for the Communist Party in American history.

Wilson, FDR, and LBJ are up there as well.

Obama has succeded, as awful as the truth is. This is why Rush said that he hoped Obama would fail. A lot of people did not understand what he was saying at the time, but it is becoming clear now. Obama will contnue to succeed when he ushers in 10-20 million new Democrat voters via amnesty for the 2016 election. Then the fundamental transformation to a single party state will be complete. The bill the Republicans will vote on won’t include voting rights for all these new immigrants, but the US Supreme Court is on 24 hour standby for that case. Sotomayer will write the majority 5-4 opinion and I expect that it will all happen very quickly.
