There's never been a case reported where a squirrel had rabies........

When you use a word like "never" you had best back it up.

This is from the Hunterdon County New Jersey Rabies Fact Sheet (the first one I found on Google):

Squirrels, mice, and other small rodents have only very rarely been found to have rabies, and have never been known to transmit rabies to humans or other animals.

So they apparently have found squirrels with rabies. BTW, I checked before posting what I said. Everything I saw said "rare" but nothing said "never." Certainly such behavior in a squirrel would be rare. So reality comports with my first impression. If a squirrel attacked me like that I would kill it and have it checked. What you do is your business.
