I may have been misinformed, but Ellis Island screened people pretty closely for disease, and many were turned back if they were found to be ill upon arrival.
When I was a little girl, I had the habit of biting my fingernails. My grandmother, in an effort to get me to stop, told me that I wouldn’t have been let into the USA if they had checked my nails and saw that I had been biting them. I doubt that it was true, but it did make an impression.
Maybe we should bring Ellis Island out of mothballs, and re-establish the original habit of quarantine.
