NY Post ^

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials scrambled to meet a United Airlines flight from Brussels at Newark Airport on Saturday after a passenger believed to be from Liberia exhibited signs of Ebola.

Almost 300 passengers on United Airlines flight 998 were held at the terminal for more than an hour after the Boeing 777-200 twin engine jet arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport just after 12 pm.

“The crew reported that a person was vomiting, and that Liberians were aboard the plane,” a law enforcement source told The Post.

“The person throwing up is believed to be Liberian,” the source said.

“The crew reported that a person was vomiting...”

They must have aired some of Obama’s speeches on the flight from Brussels to Newark.

The game of Ebola Roulette continues...

*click* spin *click* spin *click* spin…BANG!

Eeeee-bolllll-aaaaaa ping!

Bring Out Your Dead

We’re gonna need

a bigger cart!

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

Perhaps these two passengers from Liberia/Brussels have been carted off somewhere by the CDC for the 4-hour Ebola test. They announced that all is well, but that may have been to quell panic. If they keep other passengers onboard for four+ hours, that will confirm this theory.

The blood test takes a day to come back but they know in 15 minutes even as the vomit is still warm! WTF I call B.S.

Can’t blame him. So far, the US has a 100% cure rate. I expect that we’re going to get a flood of sick people from West Africa. So will Canada & Mexico. What do we do? Ban people traveling from West Africa, including Americans? Maybe immediate execution of anybody getting into the US?

For some reason they’re doing a lot of the testing in Austin, not sure why they can’t move or replicate Austin’s capabilities to...... other places?

Obozo has already announced there is no way in heck he will stop incoming flights from Liberia. It’s a shame our founding fathers didn’t design a government with a congress and courts to balance out an out of control executive branch. Oh wait, they did.

It won’t be a 100% cure rate for long. That ZMAPP had to be SHARED between the two doctors.

Not like we have stockpiles of ZMAPP to go around.

CDC already said that he didn’t have ebola but I don’t know how they can determine that without a blood test

I'm very curious about this too. Understand that blood or tissue is infectious, and any tests using blood would have to be done in an appropriate facility. Perhaps there is a new rapid diagnostic kit, but I have not heard of such a thing. You could culture the virus and then use electron microscopy, but tissue culture requires a BSL4 lab and a lot of time. You could use reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), but I would think this would take a couple of days also.

Antibody/antigenic testing is a possibility, but that is problematic because they need to have been infected long enough to produce antibodies. Indirect fluorescence antibody testing (IFAT) is quick, but has high false-positives. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is very sensitive and very specific, so it should be a good test, but takes time. I would think both of these methods would require BSL4 labs.

My guess is to make a call on the spot like this, it is based on a qualitative assessment of patient history and symptoms; in other words they are guessing. An educated guess perhaps, but still a guess.

You are right. The ebola test is to detect ANTIBODIES to the VIRUS. I can take days to weeks to produce antibodies.
Even if the initial test comes back NEGATIVE, IT DOES NOT MEAN that person doesn’t have Ebola. Early in the infection, there are NO ANTIBODIES yet.
So all this “tested negative” horse sh@t is just propaganda.

How about this: Anyone flying into America, if not a citizen or legal resident, must pay a bond that represents the cost of a one-month quarantine and air flight home (in medical isolation) and upon landing in the US, they go into quarantine immediately. If, during that month, they show any signs of infection, they are returned immediately (in isolation) to their own country.
