"Did we dodge a bullet?"
"I don't think we did," Jahrling said. "The bullet hit us. We were just lucky that the bullet we took was a rubber bullet from a twenty-two rather than a dumdum bullet from a forty-five. My concern is that people are saying, "Whew, we dodged a bullet.' And the next time they see Ebola in a microscope, they'll say, 'Aw, it's just Reston,' and they'll take it outside a containment facility. And we'll get whacked in the forehead when the stuff turns out not to be Reston but its big sister."
C.J. PETERS EVENTUALLY left the Army to become the chief of the Special Pathogen Branch at the Centers for Disease Control. Looking back on the Reston event, he said to me one day that was pretty sure Ebola had spread through the air, "I think the pattern of spread that we saw, and the fact that it spread to new rooms, suggest that Ebola aerosols were being generated and were present in the building," he said. "If you look at pictures of lungs from a monkey with Ebola Zaire, you see that the lungs are fogged with Ebola. Have you seen those pictures?" "Yes, Nancy Jaax showed them to me."
"Then you know. You can see Ebola particles clearly in the air spaces of the lung."
The Hot Zone page 265:
SO THE THREE sisters-Marburg, Ebola Sudan, and Ebola Zaire-have been joined by a fourth sister, Reston. A group of researchers at the Special Pathogens Branch of the C.D.C.-principally Antony Sanchez and Heinz Feldmann-have picked apart the genes of all the filoviruses. They discovered that Zaire and Reston ar so much alike that it’s hard to say how they are different. When I met Anthony Sanchez and asked him about it, he said to me, “I call them kissing cousins. But I can’t put my finger on why Reston apparently doesn’t make us sick. Personally, I wouldn’t feel comfortable handling it without a suit and maximum containment procedures.” Each virus contains seven proteins, four of which are completely unknown. Something slightly different about one of the Reston proteins is a probably the reason the virus didn’t go off in Washington like a bonfire. The Army and C.D.C have never downgraded the safety satus of Reston virus. It seems classified as a Level 4 hot agent, and if you want to shake hands with it, you had better wearing a space suit. Safety experts feel that there is not enough evidence, yet, to show that the Reston strain is not an extremely dangerous virus. It may be, in fact, the most dangerous of all the filovirus sisters, because of its seeming ability to travel rather easily through the air, perhaps more easily than the others. A tiny change in its genetic code, and it might turn into a cough and take out the human race.
Do we have any new word about anyone else in the family being sick, what is the status of Patient 0? What about the possible case in Hawaii?
Reasonable.
As I said though, I’m very angry now.
I’m angry with our people who elected these flaming screw ups that are not protecting the people.
I’m angry about EEO that has put so many people in positions of authority and responsibility that don’t belong there and not only allowed them in but elevated them and driven out competent responsible people in the process.
I’d like to do more than be angry. I’d like to get even if thought I could. More importantly though I wish there was something that could be done to make things better but it has gone too far. I’ve said that only fire can cleanse. I think that is true for plague and politics and people.
I haven’t seen any...
Scarey book. FREE to download (pdf). Dr. Robin Cook has written about a LOT of scenarios in his novels that have come to fruition.
Here is a NEW ONE, in Washington, DC
http://washington.cbslocal.com/2014/10/03/patient-hospitalized-in-d-c-with-possible-ebola-symptoms/
The NBC photog who has come down with Ebola, was wearing “protective gear” while he was helping to “decontaminate a car” and “he thinks some of fluids may have splashed on him”.
Cue the pic of the pressure-washer-guys in regular clothes.
Bingo! The can retreat to their estates or flee the country.
probably so......but if it really get’s airborne they may never escape.
If he isn’t symptomatic, you cannot contract Ebola from him. If you are allowed to work from home and it would make you feel better, then do so.
Otherwise, for your own peace of mind, stay 6 feet away from and to the side of him, wash your hands with soap and water often, and avoid touching your face unless you have just disinfected your hands.
When you wash your hands, sing the Happy Birthday song in your head three full times so that you wash long enough. Be sure to use the fingers of one hand to wash the webbing between your fingers on the back of the other hand. Pretend you’re a surgeon scrubbing in. Be thorough.
Use tissues or paper towels to open doors, touch elevator buttons, touch handrails, etc. So when you wash your hands, don’t touch the bathroom door handle with your clean hands. Disinfect your desk/office/cubicle with disinfectant. Ordinary disinfectant works fine on Ebola, but you can also use bleach water or chlorinated water. Do so three to four times a day, beginning with your arrival at work. Don’t forget your keyboard and phone earpiece/buttons.
“Um, shouldnt these four people be isolated from each other in case one of them has it and the other three dont?”
There ya go again. Trying to use common sense.
Haven’t you learned yet that we’re dealing with the government?
Of course, you are right. If he was infectious last week, and he probably was, she is infected. So are the kids.
Remind me again why people are still admitted to the US, or any western country, when they have been to the hot zone?
“Leaving her apartmanet, and now the sheriff deputies and others are GOING IN.”
Oh, I missed that one. How stupid are people?!
Better Half just had that done. Doesn’t much look like anytime is a good time for rotator cuff surgery, unless your arm is about to fall off.
Let’s see how they react when the zombies climb their fences and storm their palaces while bleeding from their eyeballs and teeth sockets.
I got a feeling right about then they will reconsider their stance on firearms.
Only for them of course.
