There is now a report that he went first to ER on the 24th, not the 26th as is being widely circulated

First two pebbles in the landslide...

The game of Ebola Roulette continues...

*click* spin *click* spin *click* spin…BANG!

Eeeee-bolllll-aaaaaa ping!

Bring Out Your Dead

We’re gonna need

a bigger cart!

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

There is an article around here where the Liberian community in Texas is worried. Could be this guy went to some fathering or something or else hanged around with his close family members.

Dunno, but no matter the precautions, we’re all totally dead, as in “dead” dead, like, dead, because dead.

Of course. You don't think that the immigration service is welcoming trained professionals and middle class immigrants to the US do you?

With open arms.

It's called the H-1b program, because there simply aren't any unemployed American engineers available for hire.

Ebola case stokes concerns for Liberians in Texas

Stanley Gaye, president of the Liberian Community Association of Dallas-Fort Worth, said the 10,000-strong Liberian population in North Texas is skeptical of the CDC’s assurances because Ebola has ravaged their country.

“We’ve been telling people to try to stay away from social gatherings,” Gaye said at a community meeting Tuesday evening. Large get-togethers are a prominent part of Liberian culture...................

And speculation that many Liberians are riding out the outbreak here instead of Africa. The patient had just gone to a funeral before flying to be with his Dallas family.

Case 1 started showing symptoms one week ago...And already one member in household is showing symptoms? Incubation time is shortened considerably, person 2 is very very delicate, or they are lying about how sick he was during travel.

From the source article for another thread:

5. Forty-Day Quarantines

Ebola's course of infection lasts around 37 days according to Dr. Duncan and Dr. Scott. This includes a 10 day incubation period followed by a 22 day infectious period whereby the person could be infectious but not exhibit symptoms. In the last five days the most gruesome symptoms appear in people. The 37-day estimate fits nicely with the 40-day quarantines carried out in Europe during the Black Death. Quarantine efforts in Europe were successful according to the two doctors. Sanctioning off infected families effectively "stopped the spread [of disease]." The 40-day period would have allowed for Ebola to run its course, eliminating the possibility of seemingly healthy people from infecting others during the initial 32-day period. Rats, on the other hand, would have ignored the quarantines. Thus, quarantines of plague victims could not have been as successful as an Ebola quarantine since rats are independent creatures; rats would have still been able to infect people despite a quarantine.

Of course the results are back. The test takes less than 6 hours. That they haven’t released the results says volumes.

All who have been in close contact with the diagnosed patient are being monitored as a precaution

What's their definition of "monitored"? The doctor that was admitted to Bethesda, which we still haven't heard the results of his test, was, in his own words, monitoring himself at home by merely taking his temperature twice daily. That's a mature educated medical professional who knows the importance of keeping away from others. But this Liberian family with six kids won't be as cautious. Imagine trying to keep six kids locked indoors for days. Can we assume the CDC can't be bothered to check in with their neighbors and friends?
