Ted Cruz Feeds Spiritual Revival at Values Voters Summit

Speaking at the Values Voters Summit in Washington D.C., Sen. Ted Cruz began his speech with a confession.

“Neither of my parents were people of faith at the time. Neither of them had a relationship with Christ. Both of my parents drank far too much; both of them had serious problems with alcohol,” he said. “And when I was three years old, my father decided he didn’t want to be married anymore. And he didn’t want a 3-year-old son. So he got on a plane and left.”

The audience was dumbfounded by the revelation – a rare moment in a conference audience that is familiar with cheering speeches spent attacking Obama and the political establishment in Washington.

But the story didn’t end there.

Cruz pointed out that thanks to an invitation from a colleague, his father attended a Baptist Church after he left, which inspired him to return to his family in Canada.

“He gave his life to Jesus,” he said. “And he went and bought an airplane ticket and flew back to Calgary to rejoin my mother and to rejoin his son. So when anyone asks is faith real, is a relationship with Jesus real, I can tell you if it were not for my father giving his life to Christ, I would have been raised by a single mother.”

The rest of the story, however, is familiar. Ted Cruz’s father Rafael is now a Baptist preacher and preaches the gospel of getting American citizens involved with the future of their values and their country.
