Brownback has much more on Davis of a substantive nature and has been saying so in a media campaign and elsewhere. This didn’t come from his campaign, it’s what the New York Times decided was important. I’m sure that they had the same reaction as you, and that will certainly be true in Johnson County (KC suburb). But, elsewhere in the state, even among the members of the Teachers Union, this will go over like a fart in church.
Perhaps the NYT is reminding him to vote with the democrats OR ELSE.
