It’s actually becoming difficult to remember, but, yes, the banks actually used to give you interest on your savings account in exchange for your deposit in their vaults.
They still do give you interest, but very little and you have to report it on your incometax return. In other words you are being punished for saving money, which is totally ridiculous imho
