Veganism "Can Cause Serious Harm" Say Swiss Authorities

As the popularity of alternative-lifestyle choice ‘veganism’ increases across Europe, officials in Switzerland have expressed concerns about the health implications for children who have the unusual diet forced on them by “idealistic” parents.

In the statement, Swiss officials said: “Vegan food is not recommended for young children. It can cause serious harm”. The lack of vitamin B12, which is seriously deficient in Vegan diets is the main cause of the interjection by federal health officials, who have warned denying children access to animal-derived food at an early age can cause health problems.

A very close friend of the family rarely eats meat of any kind. Once in a blue moon, perhaps. 99 % organic diet, and yet his friend is one of the most illness prone people I know. They brag about organic foods, and yet they suffer from a multitude of chronic health problems.

Our family enjoys organic foods, and we dine on a healthy diet, but not THAT “healthy”.

Sign at Captain Bill’s Sub Shop in Phoenix:

If God didn’t want us to eat animals
He wouldn’t have made them out of meat!

That’s ironic when you consider that fact that a large number of liberals are vegan.

It’s also way too low in choline, which is essential for brain function.

Caution: Vitamin B12 is not naturally-occurring in nutritional yeast. Some producers do fortify their yeast product with B-12 but you will have to check the label. However Vitamin B-12 tablets are a good supplement.

And check magnesium which I understand is necessary for adequate B12 effectiveness.

It’s interesting to me the number of public figures who were vegan and died of cancer.

Steve Jobs (Pancreatic cancer)
Robin Gibbs (Colon Cancer)
Adam Yauch (Salivory Gland cancer)

Yes, I know. Correlation isn’t causation, but it is interesting given the fact that a vegan diet is supposed to improve your health.

I eat meat myself, but I know SDA’s who live perfectly well on a vegetarian diet and do not suffer any serious ills.

Holy heck, on FR we respect each other’s religious customs. Keep your dislike of your fellow judeochristians’ customs to yourself. You know that not spelling the word is out of respect and awe.

Vegetarian diets have plenty of protein sources. It’s not that hard to consume 0.75g/Kg that the person needs.

Good for them, and I hope they live a long and happy life ... as for me, meat is something I will indulge in as long as the government will allow me that pleasure. And the way we are going, it probably won’t be long before the government will forbid the consumption of meat.

After all Hitler was a vegetarian, just say’n

Carnitine is a vital source of protein, and is only in red meat.

That’s ironic when you consider that fact that a large number of liberals are vegan.

So the reason that many vegans have a low IQ is that so many of them are Liberals.

Conservative vegans are smart.

I have been accused by Liberals, however, of being to smart for my own good.

>> a vegan diet is supposed to improve your health.

When necessary, weight loss is likely the primary benefit of the vegan diet — notwithstanding genetic abnormalities that require the unique diet.

I certainly don’t believe in telling others how to live, but I find that there are certain misunderstandings about vegetarianism on this site. People who are getting I’ll on vegetarian diets are simply eating poorly. It’s not because of vegetarianism.

That’s too bad. The effects of B12 deficiency can take time and are not necessarily obvious. And when the damage isn’t permanent, it could still take quite a bit of time to recover from the deficiency. Slow to replete, slow to restore. That’s my lay understanding.

I need a steak.
