Democrats won a key legal battle in the Kansas Senate race Thursday, but now the party faces a wrenching choice: Spend precious dollars to try and unseat Republican Pat Roberts in a solidly red state, or sit on the sidelines and pass up a chance to steal a seat and potentially the Senate majority from Republicans.
The ruling removed the Democratic candidate from the ballot, clearing the way for a showdown between Roberts and independent Greg Orman and, at least on paper, increasing the likelihood that the longtime senator can be beaten. A smattering of recent polls shows Roberts running even or trailing, creating a tantalizing opportunity for Democrats to go all in to finish off the incumbent. A win would all but dash GOP hopes of winning the Senate

As for Kobach demanding the Dems appoint a replacement, what is he going to do if they refuse? The court has already said that Taylor is off. If the Dems refuse to name a new candidate then there isn't much he can do.
I would offer this observation. If this was a devised tactic of sorts....it will be hard to get this across to fifty-percent of the Democratic voters in the state....particularly if they are over the age of sixty, or learning impaired. If they don’t see a “D” by the candidate (if they are die-hard Democrats)....they won’t vote for anyone for the position and will leave it blank.
And, some idiot group could start a fake “Democrats for Roberts” campaign....confusing folks even further. All you need is a couple of TV ad’s....having some fake Democrats talk up the sad state of affairs with their guy leaving, so it’s perfect sense to vote for Roberts.
WAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Anybody know if Oram has declared which side he will caucus with? I’m guessing that it’s the Dem’s. But, if the GOP should have enough seats regardless of Kansas just wondering if he might go with the GOP. Wouldn’t be much fun being in the minority party as a back bencher. Also been wondering about Joe Manchin. He’s been straying off the reservation with some of his comments lately. I’m thinking that if the GOP should take the senate and he should be offered the right incentives maybe he could be turned?
What kind of sick joke is this? The "Dems" just SUED to drop out of the race!!! And it was only allowed due to the Court being appointments of Sebelius.
This PROVES without a doubt that the Orman campaign is a complete SHAM. This is a democRAT in 'independent' sheep's clothing. Kansas, reject the RAT Orman!
Before throwing cash at him the Rat Party will quietly...secretly...sound him out regarding "Dirty Harry vs McConnell".They'll promise him big cash for a Dirty Harry vote next January and nothing for any other vote. The Rats assumed going in that thy had no chance in Kansas so there's only an upside in this for them.
Foreswearing allegiance to neither party is BS. He doesn’t have to say that he will vote for the GOP, but he should at least refuse to vote for Harry Reid or any Dem leader. If he cannot declare that he will NOT vote for a Dem majority leader, he has proven that he is total BS and only out for himself.
Right now, he stands for nothing and against nothing.
Pat Roberts will win and it won’t even be close. This is all a bunch of hooey. After having living in the Wichita area since 1985 I can confidently predict this. Kansans are not going to vote for this kook just like they rejected the other one who got his jollies by posting personal intimate X-rays of his patients on FB.
I received 2 mailings from Pat and when I saw that, it’s all it took for this ol Kansan to stick with the devil we know.
Oh and BTW, Pat Roberts personally intervened and helped me close a real estate transaction with a veteran who was being maltreated from the IRS. Big supporter of veterans and Kansans know this. We know Pat Roberts. There is nothing wrong with Pat Roberts and I will vote for him as long as he shows up on any ballot. Thanx Senator you hVe my vote and always will
I think the Dems will be required to name a candidate...there has to be SOMEONE on the ticket..they can’t have a vacant slot on the ballot..and even if they pick the Dodge City dogcatcher as their nominee...probably 25% of Dems will vote for him..remember Alvin Green in South Carolina?
He claims not to have decided. He also once said he would caucus with whoever is in the majority.
It'd be nice to believe that they're all that stupid but they aren't. It's all over the news. I think there is a hard core that won't vote but that they're a small minority. Those that turn out will go for Orman overwhelmingly. It all depends on turnout.
And, some idiot group could start a fake Democrats for Roberts campaign....confusing folks even further. All you need is a couple of TV ads....having some fake Democrats talk up the sad state of affairs with their guy leaving, so its perfect sense to vote for Roberts.
And if it's unmasked then it blows up in their face. Roberts has to find something else that will stick. He's run ads about Orman's business financial dealngs, Orman's responded about it being the same old Washington politics, we'll see which side wins with that.
Well Orman is sticking wiht that story, but I think everyone knows that he's far more likely to caucus with the Dems than with the GOP.
As others have pointed out, Orman claims he hasn't decided which side he will caucus with. If the GOP takes control of the Senate by one or two seats then his value to them goes up...and his trustworthiness is non-existant. Personally I think he's hoping that he can be the deciding vote for the Dems to retain control. His views are more closely aligned with them anyway.
Kobach claims the law requires it, but it's unclear that it actually does. And some guy is suing for the Democrats to name a replacement, but I don't see that working through the courts in time. So if they refuse to name someone then what is Kobach's alternative?
That other kook came within 7 points of beating Roberts in the primary, and that was with nobody but Republicans voting. Don't underestimate Orman. He's from an area that sent Dennis Moore to Congress for 10 years. It's a state that elected Sebelius. Twice. So if you think Roberts has an easy ride back to D.C. in Washington then I think you're mistaken. This isn't going to be a cakewalk.
Roberts is smart my friend. All it takes is one misstep and it’s over. Already hearing things that aren’t flattering to this other guy. Yes you’re right about Sebelius so I give you that.
I wouldn’t worry and give much credence to polls here though. I will never forget the flipped numbers when our first woman governor, the late Joan Finney beat Republican Mike Hayden. The polls the night before showed him winning 60-40%. She won the election by about that much. I voted for Joan Finney, a devout pro-life Cathollc over Mike Hayden who went hunting with George Tiller. Needless to say the applecart was overturned and the death cult demons were not pleased.
Roberts will lose and lose fairly big. And ... I really don’t care. Be sure and thank the GOPe for saddling us with this dinosaur.
By either side.
I honestly don't know. I'm not prepared to predict an Orman victory, but I wouldn't be shocked if it happened. And really if it does Roberts has nobody but himself to blame.
It makes me angry that we have a good number of people on this forum that want Roberts out, without them knowing a hoot about this guy Orman, who is a democrat in sheep’s clothing. We need the Senate. I don’t care how we get it. We can hold the Rinos to the table on how they vote once they’re in there, but controlling the Senate controlls the agenda and everything else. We have a golden opportunity to begin again and wash away the stench and waste of the last 8 years.
