Shetland may reconsider its place in Scotland after yes vote, says minister

Oil-rich Shetland may consider becoming a self-governing territory like the Isle of Man rather than stay part of an independent Scotland in the event of a yes vote, the Scotland secretary, Alistair Carmichael, has said.

In an interview with the Guardian, Carmichael said if Shetland were to vote strongly against independence but the Scottish national vote was narrowly in favour, then a "conversation about Shetland's position and the options that might be open to it" would begin.

It just seems like all I read in comments on news sites are dopes echoing this idea that Scotland is some occupied territory that is being “ruled” by some evil Englishmen.

It’s like their entire history education consists of Braveheart, kilts, and bagpipes, and they forget the reason why the Act of Union occurred, and how Scotland basically was in the driver’s seat of British history for the past 300 years for the most part.

Looking at history, there has always been a historic divide between the “lowland” (more pro UK) and “highland” Scots. A Yes win might just be followed up with a lowland vote to stay in the U.K., sort of like N. Ireland.

The Shetlands will be offered a crown to stay.

They’ll go to the Isle of Man and race motorcycles.

And they couldn't prevent Jack from being happy.

Maybe the extreme southern and extreme western parts (border towns) would vote to join Mexico. We could maybe throw in Austin as a bonus ;-) (Kidding!)

Scotland needs clear subdivision before such votes could be held. But I agree once they have been established and some years gone by then they should hold such their own referendom.

If Shetland is as liberals as you say, then Scotland probably would be better off without them.

That being said Scotland is probably going to lose this vote for Independence, but that don’t matter too much in the long run. They come this close they will try again and eventually they will convince enough of their countrymen that they can make it on their own once more. Scotland is a nation and was politically independent of England for most of it’s existences as a unified people not that this matter.
I can’t see the world or Scotland changing all that much as a separate nation particularly with NATO, the EU, and the UN. It just means the British get 2 votes in those bodies instead of 1. I don’t have a problem with that.

The Chinese might try to claim Shetland is in their territorial waters.
