We are right in the middle of Houston on a very busy city street in a nice neighborhood. That doesn’t matter, crooks just think we have more good stuff to steal so crime happens all around us. We have been fortunate.

A cross the street neighbor had his house cleaned out (and I do mean cleaned out) last year. The took his furniture, pictures off the wall and clothes out of his closet. He was at work and they spent the day there stealing his stuff.

His alarm was not sufficient . Our monitored alarm is connected to a cell number so we have no wires. We have indoor scans in case the glass breaks don’t work.

We have tried to cover all possibilities but of course, we could still get robbed. People are being followed home and accosted in the garage. it could happen.

Behind me is a steep ridge and a half mile to the next house. The road I live on is Dead End which discourages mischief somewhat. Too easy to trap a perp. But I am cautious even here about coming home at night when we got out. The first thing I do before unloading my wife is let the dogs out of the house and watch how they act. Getting her down on the lift is when we are most vulnerable anywhere and I have to be somewhat distracted to get her out safely.

All anyone can do is simply make it difficult and as noisy as possible for the perp to gain access or get close enough to do harm. Take as many advantages away from them as you can. A win/win situation is where they simply give up and leave. Their life is spared and homeowner is spared years of litigation and upper tens of thousands of dollars in legal expenses.
