I don’t understand how your example ends poverty. I see it as raising the poverty line by one dollar. Then again, I’m stupid.
I think you missed the point. I was trying to show my students that poverty is a relative concept and that, unless you can enforce a perfectly-even distribution of income, eliminating poverty is impossible. All attempts at a perfect distribution of income have failed throughout history, and the War on Poverty was doomed from the day Johnson announced it. It was, and sitll is, purely a political ploy to win votes. In that sense, it was a success. In all other respects, an abject failure.
