An interesting look at the evolution of some of Kerry's views on the use of America's military and its CIA might be of passing interest now, given some of his recent statements.
When he first ran for Congress in 1970, the Harvard Crimsom ran a lengthy article by Samuel Z. Goldhaber about him and his candidacy.
The following is a brief excerpt from Goldhaber's piece:
He supports a volunteer Army, "if and only if we can create the controls for it. You're going to have to prepare for the possibility of a national emergency, however." Kerry said that the United Nations should have control over most of our foreign military operations. "I'm an internationalist. I'd like to see our troops dispersed through the world only at the directive of the United Nations."(End of excerpt)On other issues, Kerry wants "to almost eliminate CIA activity. The CIA is fighting its own war in Laos and nobody seems to care."

Hmmm. CIA analysts state that the number of active IS-IS “fighters” is around 30k.
Standard counter-insurgency teaching holds that you must have about a ten to one ratio to insure victory. John “Nam Vet” Kerry should know that a counter-insurgency op indeed requires hundreds of thousands, alongside efforts to divorce the population from the insurgents.
You don’t go to war unless the alternative is unthinkable. If you must go, make the other side decide that continuing the war is unthinkable. Don’t waffle.
Remember the speech Zell Miller gave at the 04 GOP convention ?
He warned us about Kerry and his ilk, including his current boss.

Zell was right!
We got muzzie terrorists running around all over the planet and we’ve got John Kerry running around saying “we must fight properly, Marquis of Queensbury rules!”. My dad taught me the only definition of a fair fight was one that you got to walk away from because you won. That’s the name of the game here.
