Los Angeles (CNN) -- "Django Unchained" actress Daniele Watts defended her refusal to show her ID to Los Angeles police before they handcuffed her last week.
The African-American actress and her white boyfriend accused police of racism for questioning them in what they said was only a public display of affection.
"I believe in America and what it stands for," Watts said Monday in an interview on CNN's "New Day."
Police responded to a citizen complaint that "a male white and female black were involved in a sexual act inside a Mercedes" outside the gate of CBS Studio Center on Thursday, according to a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department.

Could she just pull out her race card instead of an ID?
Well, she isn’t employed for her intelligence or good sense.
If I see two people in a car in my neighborhood making out...I’m calling the cops...get a room!
It appears that the real issue was about having sex in public.
Yes she does kind of look like a hooker in the photo taken at the time of the arrest. (A real hooker, not the Hollywood version)
I was initially sympathetic to her, but then the real story came out. I have read that she was having sex with her boyfriend in full view with the passenger seat open. The employees at the Director’s Guild offices saw this happening, and called the police.
She and her boyfriend should have been arrested for indecent exposure, but she pulled the race card.
Still, if a cop approaches you and asks for ID, and you aren’t committing a crime, and have a lawful right to be where you are, can you refuse to identify yourself?
In most countries the answer is no. If a cop asks for ID, its not even a question, you had better have it on you and produce it. But in the US, can you refuse to identify yourself? Can you be detained if you are not driving and you aren’t carrying ID?
>>Daniele Watts had just left CBS studios in the San Fernando Valley around 2 PM Thursday. She says she was making out with her BF, but weve learned witnesses from the nearby Directors Guild office building told cops they were watching her and her BF have full-on sex in the passenger seat WITH THE DOOR OPEN!<<
I’m a male WASP and I probably would have taken a ‘ride-downtown’ if I were asked and refused to show my ID.
As long as no one has called the cops on you for making out in public.
How dramatic. She should get an Oscar for the whole chest clutching act.
I hope we don’t get to the point as a society where police are telling victims, reporting parties or witnesses, “Sorry folks, can’t do anything, they pulled the race card.”
With your ying yang out in the front seat of your car with your wife/girlfriend and with people around watching?
Unlike some other states, California does NOT have a law requiring people to show ID to the police upon request (except for drivers stopped for a traffic offense who have to show their driver’s license and vehicle registration). So she was within her rights to tell the cop to buzz off, and he did not have probable cause to arrest her.
Something’s very fishy about this story.. Almost as if it was staged, and even sanctioned by higher ups trying to rally the black base ahead of November. I guess the Ferguson candle is fading.
“I dunno andy but the woman SOUND like she were on Crack!”
“Well, she isnt employed for her intelligence or good sense.”
Yup intelligent and good sensed H-wood types have to be low-profile terrain hugging actors.
Intelligence is most definitely not appreciated in LaLaLand.
“messing around” means they were having sex in a car with the door open for all to see.
It appears that Django was unleashed in public.
You know witnesses had cell phones taping away. Perhaps a video showing why the cops were called will surface on the net.
