Just to be clear, you might want to tip the maids, but if you leave cash, they probably won’t want to take it in fear of being accused of stealing from guests. I think the envelopes are a good idea for those who may want to tip.

That's a valid point. Even if I wanted to tip, I wouldn't know how to do it, since it's hard to find the maid.

You just need to leave a few dollars on the night stand or dresser the day you leave. The maids are well aware of your departure date.

I am beyond amazed that so many people were never taught this.

I've always found that leaving $2-5 laid out neatly on my pillow, is an appropriate way to tip. The maids always see to get the idea.
