It was not sop then to keep hot armed jets on the flight line ready to go. The story I read right here on FR back then is exactly the same account I read in 2001, other than they named the pilots in this story. They were ready to ram that flight if it had gotten close to Washington. The hero's on Flight 93 saved them from that horrible duty.

I recall hearing two jets fly over my house that morning (I used to live outside Annapolis) and I was wondering what that noise was about. BWI airport was just a few miles away and I was used to hearing distant aircraft but these guys sounded really close. I did not know that the attacks had happened until later.
