City schools police have obtained their own military-grade Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle through a federal grant.
Known as an MRAP, the armored vehicle will be converted into a victim rescue vehicle that will be stocked with thousands of dollars in advanced medical supplies and be able to take heavy fire in case of an attack on campus, the San Diego Unified School District Police Department said Tuesday.
The MRAP, valued at more than $700,000, was acquired at no cost to the district. The vehicle is expected to be operational in October.

Give them to the National Guard. Oh, but wait...that's where a lot of these surplus vehicles came from. So why is Obama taking these vehicles away from the Guard and giving them to the police? Hmmm?
No money in prevention.......
They need to drive these a few miles south and use them to SECURE THE BORDER!

Yep.... send your kids to peaceful San Diego
It will be used as a smoking lounge by the teachers.
I believe there was a line in a 70s Woody Allen about the day Albert Shanker and the teachers’ union got hold of a nuke . . .
“be able to take heavy fire in case of an attack on campus cafeteria by hungry 3rd grade students being force-fed Meatless Tasteless Moochie Lunch Meals [MTMLM`s]”
Armed teachers would be much more effective. The response time couldn’t be beat either.
His premise is flawed. The choices aren’t destruction or give to a school district. A wise policy would provide these to the border patrol or a federal agency that is trained and isn’t pointing them at the US citizenry. Failing that, give it to the national guard, train local guardsman how to use them, and call them out to help if and when there is a siege at a school. That makes it available if needed at a courthouse, jail, high-rise condo, park, beach or whatever.
Sounds like Sleeper.
Early Woody Allen movies were his best to me.
Ping.
No offense, but that's a pretty ignorant question...
Just a crazy thought, but why not give it them to the National Guard?
How about the border patrol?
This is not too complex...
Wow posting from iPhone is just not working out.
Should be “oil change” and needs to be kept in top running condition
Surprises me that Ø didn't find a way to put it in the path of ISIL (tm, by Ø) so they could "find it" and beef up their arsenal.
Excellent point.
All part of His civilian police force
My knee-jerk response would be: Don’t worry; the school will soon discover the exorbitant O&M costs of an MRAP would eat up their budget, just like the Army and Marine Corps did. But then I realized that this is a California school district we’re talking about, and they don’t worry about controlling costs.

I spent 25 years in the Border Patrol and we received a great deal of surplus military gear.
In fact when I joined in 1985 everything from the furniture to the typewriters were excess military stuff.
Our helicopter fleet was all left over from Vietnam and many of the aircraft still showed damage from combat. We flew the hell out of them and only stopped when we could no longer get spare parts.
One thing you had to be careful of were excess military vehicles. Sure they maybe free but chances are they don't run and obtaining parts can be a big problem. Many require special tools and other proprietary stuff. Specific training for the garage to work on them was also a problem.
I let our electronic techs talk me into letting them get a snow cat from the local Air Force Survival School for "Free". Ten Thousand dollars and a year and a half later the stupid thing still did not work.
I bet a large amount of the stuff currently being given away is returned in a short amount of time once state and local governments realize how expensive they are to operate and maintain.
Wait until they come to school and their MRAP is up on cinder blocks with all the $1200 a piece tires missing! Lol.
Government agencies do have a tendency to “save us money” by giving away stuff to get it off the books; that way they can then claim they “have a need” and must buy a new one.
