President Obama told congressional leaders in a meeting Tuesday that he has the authority to launch broader attacks against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, downplaying the prospect of a Capitol Hill vote on his military plan ahead of his prime-time address to the nation Wednesday night.
Obama told the leaders that he has the authority he needs to take action against [the Islamic State] in accordance with the mission he will lay out in his address tomorrow, the White House said in a readout of the meeting that included Obama, Vice President Joe Biden; House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio; Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.; Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.; and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
The president told the leaders that he would welcome action by the Congress that would aid the overall effort and demonstrate to the world that the United States is united in defeating the threat from" the Islamic State, the White House added.
Some lawmakers have called on the president to seek congressional authorization for airstrikes in Iraq and potentially Syria, but the White House says the president is under no obligation to do so.

Isnt it this same ‘going it alone’ thing that they liberals castigated Bush for?
Good line.
If he were to ask for congressional approval, they would have given it to him. But he doesn’t think he should ask for anything.
Dennis Kucinich is having a stroke. LOL!
Except that Bush got congressional approval for both Afghanistan and Iraq.
You’re missing the point. It matters not what Bush did only what goes on in the minds of demented liberals. So, if they found ‘going it alone’ unacceptable for Bush why not the same for Barry?
Liberals “know” that Bush went it alone because Dick Cheney is really Dr. Evil.
Or something.
And that 0bama won't go it alone - even if he says he will go it alone - because he is not Bush.
Unless they are of the super far left and then they will say that 0bama went it alone because the “corporations” made him.
I know it's not a pretty picture, but such is the mind of a liberal.
Once again, a question for Republican candidates for POTUS.
“Do you believe the office of the president is too powerful, and with an agreement between congress and the president, it should have its authority reduced to constitutional levels?”
If they say it is okay as it is, or not powerful enough, they should be shown the door. And if they agree that it is too powerful, they should be asked to name the ways it should be reduced in authority.
And there is a long list of ways this should be done, so hemming and hawing is right out.
He created chaos in Afghanistan and Iraq. Started wars in Libya and Somalia and tried to overthrow a gov’t in Egypt.
Plus he wants Iran to have nuclear weapons.
The republicans refuse to stop him.
