A new poll released Sunday morning shows U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell opening up a clear lead over Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes in Kentuckys U.S. Senate race.
An NBC News/Marist poll shows McConnells strongest positioning yet. His 8-point lead among likely voters, 47 percent to 39 percent, is outside the polls margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points. Libertarian candidate David Patterson pulled 8 percent.
Chuck Todd, moderating his first episode of Meet the Press on Sunday, noted the success Grimes has had fundraising when he announced the new numbers.
In red-state Kentucky, Alison Grimes, a Democrat, tons of money, shes behind eight, Todd said. Not looking very good for her.
McConnells advantage is up significantly from the deadlocked race the same poll found in May when McConnell and Grimes were essentially tied with McConnell nominally leading 46 percent to 45 percent among registered voters.
The most recent poll was conducted between Sept. 2-4, indicating that recent stumbles like the resignation of his campaign manager and the release of a secret recording of McConnell speaking to a Koch brothers retreat have not yet had a detrimental effect on the senators re-election efforts.
There also is evidence to suggest that Grimes national party identification, combined with a relentless effort by McConnell and his allies to tie Grimes to President Barack Obama, has taken its toll on the Democratic challenger.
The poll found that Obamas approval rating in Kentucky is a woeful 31 percent.
Meanwhile, an online poll released by CBS News/New York Times/YouGov shows McConnell leading Grimes 47 percent to 42 percent.
Two other polls released in the last week also show McConnell with a small lead.

Exactly. GOP-E is more of the same old nonsense.
Yup, the same useful idiots that refused to vote for Romney.
As our own history teaches, once an institution is corrupted into a tyranny, there is no redress from within that system upon those whom rule it. Repeated efforts for redress will be met with repeated injury.
That is why Conservatives should be absolved from all allegiance to the GOP, and that all political connection between them and the Republican Party is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.
We are arrived at a prophetic place that history repeatedly visits.
“Once a Constitution of Government once changed from Freedom, can never be restored. Liberty once lost is lost forever. When the People once surrender their share in the Legislature, and their Right of defending the Limitations upon the Government, and of resisting every Encroachment upon them, they can never regain it.” - John Adams.
Especially from within a party so corrupted. Stopping the Federal Behemoth will have to happen from outside the system and not from within the parties and institutions that are corrupted by those in power.
You people would rather put a gun to our heads and force us to vote for your Obama-lite Ruling Class Big Government oligarchs?
Makes you no different than the Marxists.
Your 'candidates' gave us no reason whatsoever to vote FOR them. So we refuse to give them and those who declared war on us, our votes. They are big government statists, and yet you call us 'useful idiots'???
Go and pander to your precious 'independents' and hispanics to get the votes your party needs. Your party pissed away it's base and declared war on it.
No difference between the Ruling Class GOP OR the MarxoFascist Democrats.
Good news, imo.
Spoken like a true grade school looser.
While I’m not a big McConnell fan, I tend to agree with you.
Let’s take the Senate this year and push for a new majority leader like Cruz, Lee or Jeff Sessions.
McConnell’s ACU rating is as follows: 2013 - 92; 2012 - 100; Lifetime - 90.16.
My guess is Grimes would be somewhere around Harkin’s - 2013 - 0; Lifetime 7.60 or McCaskill’s 2013 - 4; Lifetime - 13.86.
I’m concerned about potential judges over the next 2 years, especially SCOTUS.
And, the one not many mention is that there are going to be a lot more R Senators (22) up for election in 2016 than D Senators (10) (not including the 3 special elections - Hawaii, SC and OK). Heres the list:
DEMOCRATS
Michael Bennet (Colorado)
Richard Blumenthal (Connecticut)
Barbara Boxer (California)
Patrick Leahy (Vermont)
Joe Manchin (West Virginia)
Barbara Mikulski (Maryland)
Patty Murray (Washington)
Harry Reid (Nevada)
Charles Schumer (New York)
Ron Wyden (Oregon)
REPUBLICANS
Kelly Ayotte (New Hampshire)
Roy Blunt (Missouri)
John Boozman (Arkansas)
Richard Burr (North Carolina)
Dan Coats (Indiana)
Tom Coburn (Oklahoma) Retiring in 2014. Seat TBD in 2014 special election.
Mike Crapo (Idaho)
Chuck Grassley (Iowa)
John Hoeven (North Dakota)
Johnny Isakson (Georgia)
Ron Johnson (Wisconsin)
Mark Kirk (Illinois)
Mike Lee (Utah)
John McCain (Arizona)
Jerry Moran (Kansas)
Lisa Murkowski (Alaska)
Rand Paul (Kentucky)
Rob Portman (Ohio)
Marco Rubio (Florida)
Richard Shelby (Alabama)
John Thune (South Dakota)
Pat Toomey (Pennsylvania)
David Vitter (Louisiana)
Hawaii, Oklahoma and South Carolina each have one Senate seat TBD in 2014 Special Election. Winner of 2014 special election will be up for re-election in 2016.
No surprise here
Ditch Mitch.
We can win the rest of our seats, ditch Mitch and be just fine.
Our country is going downhill as long RINO’s like McConnell and Dems like Harry Reid populate the US Senate.
That lefty McConnell done that in the primary when he punched conservative tea party types in the face.
Grimes is dumber than a slag heap.
I have a blowing in the wind sometimes conservative, sometimes libertarian chameleon in Rand Paul who has thrown in with the GOPE.
I have a totally useless race baiting liberal in McConnell who is the epitome of everything that is wrong with the Republican Party.
And my representative makes the Porkster Robert Byrd look like a cheap piker. Some choices Kentuckians have in November... I will be voting down the ticker looks like as nothing at the top has earned my vote or respect.
Yes, we are all better off having two terms of Obama stacking the courts with ultra-liberal judges. Is that what excites you, “true conservative”?
I hope you don’t think you are fooling anyone.
Quick - go out and count campaign signs again and tell us your detailed analysis.
McConnell will win to the disappointment of liberals and some conservatives alike.
Gonna happen regardless of who we put in there. What has McConnell done to oppose the ultra liberal judges and Maoist cabinet morons Obama has already put on the bench and into office????
NOTHING!!! Not a damn thing!! He rubber stamped them confirmed!!!
McConnell voted to confirm nearly 80 percent of Obamas judicial nominees who received up-or-down roll call votes on the Senate floor
So don't give me this crap that not voting for McConnell means Obama gets to stack the judiciary. McConnell ENABLED Obama to stack it ALREADY!
McConnell has proven he is no Conservative whatsoever and has via subterfuge and back room deals, enabled most of Obama's agenda in the Senate.
Unlike party hacks, true Conservatives are not beholden to party - but their principles. The GOP is no longer a viable party for Conservatism.
It's leader declared war on us and vowed to 'crush us' everywhere. So it does not matter a whit whether or not who we put in there between McConnell or Grimes.
