Primary radar returns - does that mean that the radar can detect a plane even without a transponder? Is there a way for terrorists to defeat that ability? Would they have to have radar scrambling ability to do that? How did the Malaysian flight go off the radar for so long?

Also, the hole in our southern radar defense - is that only at altitudes that a missile would fly at, or could planes also fly at that altitude without being detected?

Why do these planes still exist?

Would a plane taking off from Venezuela be able to reach the hole in our southern-facing radar and fly into US airspace undetected? This was an issue last year (IIRC) when the question arose as to whether North Korea or Iran had a package in orbit there that could potentially be a nuke that could be detonated for an EMP attack.

Primary returns are shown as a result of the radar energy returned from the craft's skin. B2 bomber results may vary.

Defeating that primary return would be difficult and I'm not sure TPTB want it dissected here. (Ditto on the postulated weaknesses of our southern defense.) There is a fear those clever guys on and related to MH370 were into doing just such things.

Transponders are removed routinely for maintenance and the plane could fine just fine without it.

Remember that report. The pilot's home setup supposedly had information indications of where to fly to avoid radar. Wonder if this information was ever confirmed?

read the whole report and I do not know if meets criteria. It is an opinion but isn’t that what nearly 99% of news is ... opinion. Am not certain what Jim would say. Looks pretty clean to me, an account of the jets getting disappeared from the Tripoli airport, with source and pix.

Seems worthwhile.
