My memory is sketchy, but I recall some muzzies kidnapping a Soviet official and demanding concessions in return for his release.
The Soviet response was to take prisoner someone associated with the muzzy outfit, and then to have one of his fingers delivered to the captors, with a note promising more deliveries at regular intervals. I think after the third or fourth delivery, the muzzies let the Soviet official go free.
Again, I cannot recall the details, but I seem to remember it happening in the 1980s.
