The summer-long trial of four Blackwater security guards in the shootings of more than 30 Iraqis has been a grim retelling of lives snuffed out and the daily life-and-death decisions amid the chaos of war.
Wrapping up almost 6,200 miles from Baghdad, the trial is the best hope the survivors and the families of the victims have for accountability for the violence at Nisoor Square on Sept. 16, 2007, in which 14 people were killed. After 10 weeks of arguments and testimony, the case goes to the jury Tuesday.

Hardly, they were operating under the same rules as the US military at the time. Even if they were under fire there was no reason to be blasting anything that moved, just because they could. In any event they should be thanking their luck stars they are being tried in the US instead of Iraq.

So we are not prosecuting Americans in American courts for violating the laws of Iraq, a largely lawless country at the time.
What’s next? Should we put Americans on trial for apostasy? If we find a US citizen who is an atheist, a death penalty crime in most of the Islamic world, should we enforce their laws on him?
What a travesty.
Hopefully President Cruz will pardon them.
