My husband was kicked out of the house at 16 by his Mom’s live-in boyfriend. He lived in his car while working 30 hrs/week...no one would rent to him (of course) because he was a kid. He parked in the heated car wash at night, the local cops would come and wake him up to go to school every morning.

Fortunately, his sister turned 18 a few months later & rented an apartment for the two of them...he had plenty of money saved up for that...LOL! He was too embarrassed to ask for help from anyone.

I’m sure he was a handful as a teenager...but how bad could he have REALLY been holding down an overnight warehouse job at that age while going to school and fending for himself? Those are qualities that should have been rewarded and encouraged. Instead (with the exception of the cops) he was stigmatized and made fun of at school by both students and staff...they all knew what was going on...and no one stepped up to help.

He is highly intelligent and a successful business owner...but he laments the fact that he did not go to College. He was interested in math and engineering...but as a kid just dumped like that he was left adrift.

Sad to think what some of these kids could have become had they not been used as “meal tickets” for those who were supposed to be caring for them. Hopefully, some will use it as motivation to find their own way to success.

Why doesn’t your husband go to college? there’s no age limit.

I’ve been kicked out and left out in the cold, but at age 24 and after a room/board, to adult foster care and then to a room/board. I’m getting control of my SSD in a while and then it’s adios to those who shut me out.

The only problem was that hte mother knew the boyfriend was the handful, but scapegoated your husband. It often happens and it’s a FACT that stepparents are not as ‘attached’ to the kids from another marriage. They often resent the kids.
