Interesting article on page 16 about the Calais deception which continues to be a fascinating topic contribution greatly to the success of D-Day and the Normandy campaign. Equally fascinating is that the German Fifteenth Army was effectively rendered out of commission in the deception because of one name - Patton.
I have read some accounts of Knutsford that tie it into the deception. Patton really was assured there would be no reporters at his talk. But, supposedly, British intelligence wanted to make sure the Germans were aware that he was in England and at his HQ, so they leaked the speech. Apparently, the Brits had no idea there were so many Soviet Union lovers in the U.S. who would take offense at the speech. They nearly spiked their own operation by nearly getting Patton fired.
Or so some say.
