The despondent German officers sitting on the floor of the hotel, like student drivers in line at the DMV, made me smile.

I'm not sure all those officers look dejected. Maybe humiliated, but some seem pretty stoic about it. They got to ride out the war in one of the most beautiful cities in the world and now get spend the rest of it safe, warm and well fed in an Allied camp.

I agree with you, Joe. I don't think bombing the camps now would have made much difference. Plus, you can see from the photo how small the buildings are we most would have wanted to hit, the gas chambers, crematoria and rail facilities. As we are all well aware, "precision" bombing in WWII was not very precise.

Sad to see Patton is already running out of gas. There is a limit to the volume of supplies that can come through Cherbourg and be trucked across France. We badly need Brest, Le Havre, but especially Antwerp. It's disheartening to see the discord between Ike and Monty over broad front v. one "dash" across Germany. Didn't either one realize neither was feasible without Antwerp?
