I have read some accounts of Knutsford that tie it into the deception. Patton really was assured there would be no reporters at his talk. But, supposedly, British intelligence wanted to make sure the Germans were aware that he was in England and at his HQ, so they leaked the speech. Apparently, the Brits had no idea there were so many Soviet Union lovers in the U.S. who would take offense at the speech. They nearly spiked their own operation by nearly getting Patton fired.

Or so some say.

For me, the Patton factor adds so much more color and interest to all this stuff.

BTW, the movie Patton will be on TCM around Sept 25th. It will be more fun to watch now because these great posts and threads have given so much more detailed knowledge of what’s going on.

My son and I just watched Patton again on Netflix last weekend. There's Hollywood in it, of course, but it is still a great movie.

I read somewhere that George C. Scott thought he was making an antiwar movie because of all of Patton's over the top eccentricities and was taken aback when the movie revived Patton's popularity. Scott was quite the leftie, IIRC.

Seemed like George C. Scott might have been at war with his own proclivities. Seemed like he was born to play the role of a military general. He was great in a humorous role as General Turgeson in Dr. Strangelove. To me those two roles, both as a general, defined Scott’s acting greatness.

Seems that if he had been born in another time, he might have embraced his destined role. As it is, a seeming victim of popular culture and political correctness, he seemed to reject his nature, grew his hair like a hippie, and followed the Patton role with a pretty awful role about talking to a dolphin.

You mean this great bit of acting?

I was going to caption this, but I thought of too many, some not appropriate for this forum. :-))

Patton, lying in the water with a dolphin. Gotta love it.
